New brass and copper arrive with a factory finish and sometimes a light film from handling. Between Dhanteras on the 6th and Diwali on the 8th you have two days — plenty.

• Wash first. Rinse in warm water with a drop of mild soap, then dry immediately with a soft cloth. Never leave brass or copper wet.
